I am gene positive for Huntington’s Disease (HD). HD is a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder that has symptoms similar to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and ALS. There is no treatment and no cure. I am currently symptom-free but in the future I will have trouble with mobility and will most likely be using a wheelchair.
In early 2020 I was on a family vacation in San Francisco when I discovered National Park Passport Stamps at the gift shop in Alcatraz. I love collecting and completing achievements, and I was immediately hooked by the program. I decided to make a goal of visiting all 423 units of the National Park Service.
I am now 23 units into that goal. Sometimes I visit a site and realize that I will never be able to come back once I am in a wheelchair. What started as a fun pet project has now become a race to visit all 423 sites before I am unable to experience them fully.
This blog is to document my journey but also to discuss the accessibility of each site. It is my hope that the NPS will continue to make improvements so that everyone can enjoy our National Parks.
